New York is home to over thousands of different non-profit organizations all working to improve the state of our city… Recycle-A-Bicycle is no exception.
This organization is dedicated to helping the youth of NYC acquire real-life job skills while giving them an environmental education. The program recycles discarded bicycles and terms them into usable models of green transportation. In the process, kids learn how to fix bikes and build new ones from scratch using discarded materials. At the end of the program, each participant gets to go home with a new bike made with their own hands.
Last year a little over a thousand kids participated in the Recycle-A-Bicycle program and helped refurbish 500 bikes and build more than 600. Together, they saved about 1,200 bikes each year from getting dumped into landfills and diverted around 36,000 pounds of waste back into working order.
Recycle-A-Bicycle has shops in Dumbo, East Village and Long Island City. If you’re looking to lower your carbon footprint by taking up pedaling, this is a great place to shop for a bike.
