Scrapes of Zebra Mussels

As this year’s Columbus weekend comes to a close, I am forced to leave the beauty of Seneca Lake…

Seneca Lake

for the hustle of NYC. As I went to take one last dip in the frigid water (62 degrees) I forgot to suit up with water shoes and ended up leaving the water with scrapes all along the bottoms of my feet; what attacked me, you ask? Zebra mussels, the invasive species that has wreaked havoc on fresh water lakes in the area since their accidental introduction in 1988. They were attached to the hulls of salt water boats brought into the Finger Lakes via a series of canals. They’ve disrupted the natural ecosystem of the lake causing phytoplankton and swimmers alike to resentfully adjust to the Zebra Mussels’ inevitable existence.
