First to attempt a trip on the rocky seas, “The Turanor” a solar powered catamaran has left port to circumnavigate the globe.
The Turanor was named after a word from The Lord of the Rings meaning “the power of the sun.” It is equipped with a six-person crew and moves at a slow pace of 8mph.
A NBC New York article published on November 30, 2010 covered the boat’s features, and the goals behind the quest.
“This voyage around the world is meant to test the long-term performance,” Domjan stated. “When it comes to solar shipping, brilliant innovation is required: less weight, less friction, efficient propulsion, a reliable solar energy store and finally, the production of electric energy.”
The Turanor has recently pushed off from it’s stop in Monaco and has 9 more months left in its journey.
