Red “Honey” in Red Hook

Just when you thought urban beekeeping couldn’t get anymore bizarre, the New York Times goes and publishes this article. Apparently, bees have a taste for artificial sweetener just like us, and some local hives are foregoing pollen for the Red Dye No. 40 found in vats of maraschino cherry juice that are laying around Brooklyn. The result:

As if the fact that there are uncovered vats of maraschino cherry juice sitting out in the open in Brooklyn wasn’t strange enough.
