Oh Christmas Tree, oh Christmas Tree, how do I recycle thee?
Easily, according to the Department of Sanitation in New York City. There will be a citywide collection between January 4th-January 15th. Be sure to remove all ornaments, tinsel, and other holiday trimmings before putting it on the street. The trees will then be made into mulch that will be distributed throughout the City. For more information, look here!
However, if you want a more hands-on mulching experience, you can bring your tree to Mulchfest 2011! Bring your tree to one of 70 locations in the City and get ready to mulch! You can even volunteer at Mulchfest. Sign up here!
Also, fun tree fact: Did you know that the first ‘green’ Rockefeller Christmas Tree was cut down in 2007 using a two-person handsaw and was lit with 30,000 energy efficient LED lights? Then, when the Christmas season was over, it was cut down and used for lumber for Habitat for Humanity! Read more about the history of the tree here.
